Building with Straw in Phoenix

Over the years we have evolved a unique hybrid system of building with bales. It combines the advantages of both “load-bearing” walls and “post and beam” methods. This system is efficient, practical and flexible. Each material does at least two functions, which increases the strengths and benefits without adding complication. Unlike, many other bale wall systems, this one easily incorporates the use of clay and other natural plasters.

The 6-day course is well suited to owner-builders, professionals or those who would like to supervise the construction of their home so that they can be well informed to make good decisions during the design and build process. The course will help each person define a practical and realistic approach that is uniquely based on his or her skill level, plus available time and resources. Participants are welcome to bring their floor plans for group design discussions and comments.

The building site is close to downtown Phoenix. There are two finished 600 sq. ft. strawbale houses on location, built during previous workshops with the same hybrid technique. This third house that we will be building during the course, will be the future main residence for the Susan and Silverio Ontiveros, our workshop hosts. This 2200 sq.ft. house will have a U-shaped courtyard design. This is a great chance to see how to do strawbales construction in an urban context with city code approval.
