Natural Plasters, Light-Straw-Clay & Earthen Floors in Washington

A 3-day workshop teaching the art of earthen plasters, the technique of building earthen floors and light-straw-clay walls.  Co-hosted by Canelo Project and Olympic Outpost in Port Angeles, Washington.

We will cover the essentials of earthen plasters, and dive deeper into the more specific finishes for your home. Each participant will have their own practice panel to learn these methods with ease and repetition. We will teach simple clay basecoats, mid-coats, and our favorite smoothed clay finishes.

Clay plasters in this workshop will be made from subsoil, water, and a fibrous organic material (typically straw) and used as the protective or decorative coating of walls and ceilings. Contents of different local subsoils naturally vary, and can be modified with more sand or clay to create the desired balance.

We will also be demonstrating Light Straw Clay methods to complete some walls on a timber-framed bathhouse at Olympic Outpost. Light straw clay is a non-structural in-fill material for framed buildings/walls. The mix consists of loose straw coated in a clay slip which is then packed into formwork. Most of the building will already be installed with panels from StraBloc.

The third day will cover finish plasters and earthen floors. These will be done on the practice panels and floor panels. Participants that can only attend the weekend can opt-out of this third day.

This course is suitable for both beginners and experts. You will learn the basics, such as finding soil, how to compose a mix, applying that mix and the required tools. You will leave with a confidence and understanding of how to build walls with beautiful, creative earth finishes.
