Community art to raise awareness
of illegal dumping in public lots.
A New View Camden, Camden NJ – 2021
In 2020, we were accepted as one of six artists to take part in a 6-month-long community art exhibition on public lots previously used for illegal dumping in Camden, NJ.
For two weeks, artists Athena Steen & Josh Sarantitis, along with other Canelo project members, taught local artist-interns and community members how to work with clay and strawbales. Together we built an earthen pizza oven and strawbale benches topped with lime plaster. This public gathering space was framed by three strawbale figures, plastered in clay base-coat and ornately sculpted.
A local Camden artist also painted a mural collectively with other interns and community members.
